Privacy Policy

Open iT respects privacy and is committed to protecting personal information.

This policy explains what the extension collects, how it is used, stored, disclosed, and protected.

This policy applies specifically to the Open iT Web App Usage Tracker, and it may supplement the broader Open iT privacy statement for general company privacy practices.

Open iT Web App Usage Tracker

This extension is designed to measure web application usage for reporting within Open iT environments. It stores and processes usage data primarily on the local device and can generate local export files for your organization.

Effective date

May 10, 2026

What this extension collects

The extension may collect and process the following information from web pages accessed through your browser:

  • Page URL, domain, and page title for http:// and https:// tabs.
  • Session timing information, including when a tab is active, in the background, or idle.
  • Activity counters such as clicks, key presses, scrolls, and mouse movements.
  • Application-identification signals from page metadata, titles, or a site's web app manifest when available.
  • Settings and usage history stored in the extension's local or session storage.

When a local Open iT native host is installed, the extension may also receive device metadata used in export headers, such as username, hostname, domain, time zone, operating system, and architecture.

Depending on deployment and context, some information collected by the extension—such as username, device-related metadata, URLs, page titles, and usage activity—may constitute personal information, personal data, or similar regulated information under applicable law.

How the information is used

  • To provide the extension’s functionality of measuring browsing activity for supported web applications.
  • To measure usage and generate summaries or export files for reporting within Open iT environments.
  • To apply locally managed URL filtering rules for which sites should or should not be tracked.
  • To comply with applicable legal, regulatory, contractual, security, or compliance obligations where relevant.

Where data is stored and shared

  • Usage data is stored in Chrome extension storage on the local device.
  • Export files are generated locally and downloaded to a local folder on the device.
  • If the Open iT native host is installed, the extension may pass exported files to that local application for transfer to an Open iT-managed directory.
  • Information collected or generated by the extension may be disclosed to the user’s organization for reporting, administration, support, and other legitimate purposes related to its deployment and use.
  • Information may also be disclosed to Open iT systems and authorized personnel who support, maintain, administer, or improve the deployment and related product functionality.
  • Information may be disclosed where necessary to comply with applicable legal, regulatory, contractual, security, or compliance requirements.
  • The extension is not designed to sell your personal information or send browsing data to third-party advertising services.

Retention of information

Information collected or generated by the extension may be retained for as long as necessary to support the extension’s functionality, usage reporting, product administration, troubleshooting, and other legitimate purposes related to the deployment. Retention may also depend on local device storage, export settings, organizational retention policies, and applicable legal, regulatory, contractual, or compliance requirements.

note

If your employer or organization deploys this extension, exported usage data may be handled under that organization's own privacy, monitoring, and retention policies.

Security

Open iT uses reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational measures designed to help protect information processed in connection with the extension from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, alteration, or loss.

Permissions explained

  • Tabs and host permissions: used to detect supported web pages and track session state.
  • Storage: used to save settings, session state, and usage history locally.
  • Idle: used to detect when the browser or user becomes idle.
  • Scripting: used to run the activity detection logic on supported pages.
  • Downloads: used to create local export files.
  • Native messaging: used to communicate with a locally installed Open iT helper application, if present.

Website requests

On supported pages, the extension may read page metadata and may request the site's own web app manifest file when one is declared by the page. This is used only to improve application identification for reporting.
